Learn as much as you can about time management and put it into practice. All of us could be so much better off if we were more efficient and effective from this point of view and could lead much more enjoyable and productive lives.

1. While this is on your mind, look at everything that you do during the course of the day and for the rest of the week. Get a large piece of paper and write each task down that you complete within a 15 minute period. This will include walking the dog, sitting down in front of the TV, even bathroom breaks; make sure that it is comprehensive. Now you’ll know where to start.

2. Don’t rely on your memory. We can all relate to forgetting about something as it has slipped our minds and know how much stress it puts on our daily grind. Make sure that you make a list and check it again!

3. Isn’t it true that almost everything that lands on your lap that is said to be vital is rarely so? Don’t think that you have to drop everything that you are doing to answer that call and be prepared to put your foot down, gently to start off, with whoever may be suggesting otherwise!

4. A well put together schedule is vitally important, so that you can schedule your priorities and ensure that they don’t schedule you! This means that you’re focusing on tasks according to a hierarchy of importance and while they say that you should never put off what you can do today, be wary of trying to rush to complete jobs before they necessarily have to be completed, as this can become a bad habit.

5. Delegate effectively. Find out who can do the job for you, trust them to do it and once you have given clear directions, let them do it. They will prioritise it according to their individual schedules.

6. Do not micro-manage. This is a major failing of some management individuals, but we can all be guilty of it at home, work or play. Once you have entrusted somebody to do a job for you, you must let them carry on.

7. Why do you procrastinate? There can be many different reasons – fear, the need for perfectionism, uncertainty or simply becoming overwhelmed. Identify the source of the issue and you will then be able to take steps to fix it.

8. Understand how important time management is. If you look at this from a financial point of view, you can work out how each minute of each hour is worth a certain amount of money and this will help you to focus, without wasting those valuable moments.

9. Be prepared to say no. This can be very difficult for some and the thought of actually turning down a money related project can appear to be crazy, especially in this stressful financial environment. Do not be tempted to take on more than you can chew, as while you might gain in the short term, you will almost certainly lose out in the longer run.

In one way or the other, we’re all used to working with a limited set of resources. For example, many of us have a restriction when it comes to the amount of money available, yet through experience and by learning the hard way, we all learn to live on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis within our respective means. Everything we do seems to have a financial value attached to it unfortunately, and we determine whether individual items, products or services are of interest largely according to the resources that we would have to spend to enable us to “afford it.” It is ironic that we live our lives as such, because we then overlook and risk wasting an even more valuable resource and one that we don’t apply any value calculation to necessarily – time. Sometimes our work or career requirements dictate that we have to be productive and adhere to strict time measurements, but it is true that we could all benefit from adhering to these kinds of standards at almost any time and really try and understand what time management actually represents.

Pause for a moment to think of the benefits of time management. Don’t include work at the moment, but just look at the remainder of your available time. You may think that you work far too much and that you have little time to spend on anything outside of your career, but if you do a simple calculation, the average person has at least one third of their available time to focus on, outside of sleeping and working periods. So, if you took the principles of effective time management and applied them to the eight hours or so of time that you have on every working day, what would happen? Don’t forget, that you have days off to factor in, as well.

One of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People according to Stephen Covey is that they must be able to manage time correctly. People look at the management of time from different perspectives and there are lots of misconceptions associated. Some of the myths associated with time management are:

1. Assuming that there is plenty of time left and you will be able to put something off until later. Never accept this position, as each block of time has an effective value which must be adhered to. If you have something to do and are assuming that you will have “plenty of time” left for this later, you may be forgetting to heed the requirements of “Murphy’s Law.” Always get something out of the way, if you have it scheduled.

2. Believing you can’t handle everything that you have to do. How is it that some people appear to breeze through everything that they have to complete, but that you have way too much “on your plate?” You simply need to organise your time in such a way that you can allocate according to correct priorities. In this way, everything will fit.

3. Concluding that as you are so busy, you must reallocate tasks to a time in future. It is a fact of life that we all subconsciously tend to place an additional perceived value on the time “right now,” as we all tend to live in the present. We should not procrastinate, as each block of time available has an equal importance.

4. Believing that we don’t have to do something now, as it is not important. Management of time is all about making a plan and sticking to it. Often, tasks may appear to be really trivial, but once your mind focuses on them, each task should be tackled and ticked off as you complete them, when such tasks are part of your scheduled and prepared plans for the day. Unless you do this, you just cannot be ultimately efficient.

5. Believing that it is impossible to reschedule. From time to time there will definitely be reasons why you must reschedule, so you have to realise this. Additional information or external triggers could come to bear on the project that you are working with, necessitating a reschedule while you get information pertinent to the problem, or for any other variety of reasons. You can always reschedule, but not if you’re just procrastinating, believing that it’s not as important to finish this task as you originally thought, and so on.

It appears that people everywhere have a tendency to love or hate Microsoft, and the company has certainly had some harsh criticism over the years, most likely due to its widespread control of the personal computer operating system for such a long time. Before it became trendy and then eventually just plain sensible to use a Mac operating system, people used to constantly complain about the incredible variety of idiosyncrasies with Microsoft’s Windows operating systems. It seemed that you were only getting used to a particular version and the Seattle-based company would trot out another. If you were thinking about buying a new PC, and you had a particular preference for one version of Windows, you often didn’t have any choice, because the new version would be automatically “bundled in” in the new computer.

Microsoft didn’t do much to assuage its many critics when it first released its Vista version of the Windows operating system - supposedly better, from someone’s point of view, than the popular XP version. As soon as it hit the public, there were a multitude of problems due to unavailability of necessary drivers or a complicated upgrading process. Application providers were slow to release drivers to work with Vista and the new OS came with a variety of annoying features and processes that made many wish they had stuck with their XP.

Late October saw the release of Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system and the initial verdict is that it’s much better than Vista and really where we should be. Some have compared it favorably with Mac’s latest OSX version, which is good news indeed for Microsoft.

Windows 7 is much more secure than XP, whose users are very much in the marketing crosshairs as they represent a significant number of people who flatly refused to upgrade to Vista. While Vista was toned down and made more user-friendly during its short life, the bad press it received never really went away.

Windows 7 is much more efficient, requiring only half of the memory needed by Vista and it is much quicker to load on startup, also drawing less battery power on your laptop. Those who did not upgrade to Vista from XP will notice significant differences and will take a little while to get used to them, but those who went through the initial pain on Vista will see a much less clunky interface and one which makes the user feel that he or she is far less constrained to tabbing, resizing, fumbling around and the general “1990s” feel of previous incarnations.

For example, features such as Aero Snape allow you to put two applications side-by-side and copy and paste easily, Aero Peek makes windows that you’re not focusing on temporarily transparent and Aero Shake allows you to “shake” a window, thereby closing all others. In short, there’s a much more instantaneous action feel about the whole platform.

In recognition of the fact that homes now have multiple computers and that they should be linked together easily, Windows 7 has a great new networking feature called HomeGroup, enabling you to set up and share any number of files very easily, including access to printers.

It is true to say that Microsoft will find it very difficult to come up with a “perfect” operating system, due to the unbelievable legacy of programs, peripherals and hardware manufacturers reliant on “uncle Microsoft” to function. Windows 7 may not be pain free, but it is a much better product out of the box than Vista ever was.

When you set out to become an entrepreneur, you can sometimes feel as if you are jumping off a cliff. It doesn’t seem to matter if you are the most organized person out there, have a degree in logistics and are perfectly well aware of what you want to achieve. Do you know how to make God laugh? All you need to do is say that you have “a plan,” which converts to your quest to be an entrepreneur! You undoubtedly have a lot of adventure ahead of you as many of your predecessors will testify. Keep your feet firmly anchored on the ground, because you will go through tremendous ups and downs as your business unfolds. You know what they say – if it were easy, everyone would be doing it!

Leverage is the ability to achieve a significant gain from a lesser investment - whether that investment is time, effort or money.

We usually think of leverage as the mechanical advantage that results from using a lever. In fact, Archimedes once boasted, “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world.”

But leverage isn’t limited to the physical world of mechanical advantage - it applies in many other situations as well.

In business, Change Agents frequently speak of varying one or more business “levers” in order to change the organization’s structure or performance. Unfortunately, in today’s world, those business levers often have negative connotations and involve job cuts, down-sizing, bankruptcies, or other forms of corporate re-organization.

But leverage has many positive uses as well.

People apply financial leverage when they use borrowed funds to increase their ROIs, or when they use calls or puts to control large numbers of stock for much less cost than if they purchased the stock.

Home businesses utilize leverage when they operate online. Simply by being online, they’ve eliminated the limitations of geography (and largely, time as well) and leveraged their advertising dollars, since it costs the about the same amount to create an ad that reaches only a few people as it does to create an ad that reaches a global market.
